Just a Frivolous Interview
I did this interview a year or so ago for a publication whose name I’ve forgotten… but it was frivolous and fun and I feel that maybe sometimes something a little lighter would do us all some good! Enjoy!
What does getting ready for writing look like for you?
I used to be a lot more informal about it than I am now. And I can sometimes do that again, if I find myself with unexpected time during the day, or with an idea that won’t let go. Those are lovely add-ons. But otherwise I’ve become very formal. I light a candle, stretch, say a prayer, and sit down; I won’t get up again until my timer goes off.
What does your writing space look and feel like?
It’s literally just a desk, but it’s my favorite place in the universe! It’s utilitarian and beautiful all at once. My Mac lives there, and there’s a good light. My daybook is between the computer keyboard and the screen, so everything is on view. And then I have a large tray filled with treasures… my collection of fountain pens, a small skull for my memento mori practice, a couple of icons, an ancient oil-lamp, and of course my candle for writing.
What’s your outfit of choice for a writing session?
I’m a simple girl when I’m at home: jeans, a sweater, no big deal.
What are you listening to?
Absolutely nothing. For a while I did try working with Lofi Girl in the background, and I still do that when I’m writing nonfiction (essays, my newsletter, etc.), but otherwise I work best in silence.
What time of day do you write?
I write every morning except Sunday from 9-11 and do absolutely nothing else in that time. Even when “writing” consists of staring at a blank screen in frustration. That time is holy, sacred.
What are you drinking/snacking on?
I’m usually on my third and final coffee of the day by the time I start writing. After that it’s just water, occasionally with electrolytes added. Don’t eat, but I do sometimes pop in a Zyn nicotine pouch for added focus.
So fun to go behind the scenes! Thank you, Jeannette de Beauvoir, for sharing your secrets with us!
